A friend has decided to put a gambrel roof on a 20×40 barn, and has asked me to help in the framing. Consider the following free body diagram (Figure 4). If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. To establish the relationship discussed in the article, we need to observe that the sum of the angular momentums must be 0. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. ![]() Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Remember that you’ll need a rafter to fit on each wall stud in your shed. Use the plywood staging area to construct each of the rafters. Make cuts to the 4×4 beams, as shown in the diagram. The first step of the project is to build the components for the front porch. Repeat the construction process for the remainder of the rafters for your roof. Building a gambrel roof with loft for a 12×20 cabin. A single rafter bolted to the top of the Gambrel would leave the inside tension members dangling. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration. Construct full rafter pieces for each wall stud on your shed or barn. The inside members on a gambrel roof are under tension. Make sure you check out the rest of the project, so you learn how to build the frame of the shed and how to make the double front doors. This article is PART 2 of the 10×10 barn shed, where I show you how to assemble the trusses and how to make the small storage loft. Angle-cut the ends of the collar ties to match the roof slope and facenail the ties to the rafters. Gambrel roofs are symmetrical, with two slopes on each side of the roof. Re: Gambrel roof Jim, I was making the distinction between collar ties (the framing member in the upper third of the rafter which holds ties the connection at the ridge to resist separation in a hurricane for example) and ceiling ties (the framing member in the bottom third of the rafter length). This step by step diy project is about 10×10 barn shed roof plans. A gambrel roof is a popular roof style on many contemporary barns and sheds. ![]()
